Modern workers can learn important lessons from the way realtors work

Real estate agents live in a world where they are always available. They are often subject to the vagaries of a client’s schedule and needs, forcing them to work irregular hours – like an open house Saturday all day or an after-dinner screening – and do proof of extreme flexibility. In many ways, the modern worker now finds himself working the same way a real estate agent does, either by choice or by necessity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended traditional work structures, and while this has offered many workers an unprecedented level of choice over where and how they work, for many it has also resulted in the fact being glued to a phone or computer on weekends or at odd hours. – in the same way that real estate agents often meet. We have our work emails on our personal phones and our Slack notifications on our smartwatches, blurring the line between personal and work technologies in our lives. But this is really nothing new to the real estate industry.

As a decades-long leader of high-performing real estate teams and a long-time executive in the real estate industry, I have seen first-hand how successful real estate agents can handle hectic and busy working hours. often unpredictable, and there are many lessons which the modern worker can learn from these agents.

High performing real estate agents create a schedule and have the discipline to follow it. When I was working day to day as an agent, even when I was doing 50-60 hour work weeks, I was able to accomplish what many other 80-90 hour realtors would need because I was meticulous in planning. my time. As independent contractors, agents must establish this schedule themselves; there is no manager or company manual giving them assigned hours.

With the rise of remote working, it has become just as difficult for all workers, who no longer have firm bookends of office schedules, to plan their days. And since no one is actually monitoring your activity, it’s easy to extend the work to the allotted time. If you give yourself firm, scheduled time, you will only fill the time that is allotted to you and not let it continue to stretch into the gray area you let exist between work and personal time.

Good real estate agents also know how to set limits and communicate those limits effectively. They let customers know when they are available and the most efficient and effective way to reach them during those times. It creates efficiency while respecting everyone’s individual schedules. Likewise, employees need to create and communicate boundaries to their managers and colleagues and educate everyone on the best way to quickly focus on something, whether it’s a messaging app, an e- mail or a quick phone call. It’s different for everyone, which is why you need to be clear on what works for you.

As a leader, it’s important to have regular conversations with your employees and bring out those ideas, while recognizing that the rules of engagement have changed dramatically due to the pandemic. You need to be explicit in modeling some best practices and teaching employees how to implement strategies to set a schedule and set appropriate boundaries while communicating effectively. Equally important is constantly checking with your employees how they are meeting this schedule and setting those expectations.
