Lesson learned: Join a real estate team that complements your skills

His secret to such success? Find the right people to walk you through the process.

How long have you been in the business?

I have always had a soft spot for old homes and started my real estate career right after college (10 years ago) investing in old and vintage homes.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Five years from now, I hope to be even more entrenched in the industry by focusing on two of my favorite passions in the business: marketing unique homes and restoring older properties.

What’s the big lesson you learned in real estate?

Build a fantastic support system. This job is very demanding. Without fixed hours, it is difficult to reconcile personal and professional life. The risk of burnout is high.

My early years, I tried to do everything. I have learned the power to join forces with other agents and professionals to help build and grow my business. By teaming up with others who can complement your skills, you can focus on the areas you are good at and complement each other’s weaknesses.

How did you find out?

My husband was understandably frustrated when I brought my laptop to this late night date. Soon after, I discovered the value of joining a team.

Not only does this give you a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of the business, but [joining a team] ensures that your customers have a pool of people available and committed to their success.

What advice would you give to new agents?

If you choose real estate as your career, you should treat it like any other business. What will be your differentiators? How are you going to add value? Define your goals and business plan and figure out what you need to invest and learn to get there.
